Weekly Digest 11/2024

Happy Tuesday evening!

For some, autumn begins with the first leaves falling from the trees or with the first lecture at school. For me, this season only seems to start when I see an ad for Espresso House’s pumpkin spice latte at my closest bus-stop. This happened today, so I instantly feel like baking cinnamon buns and planning Halloween costumes.

There might be some autumn recipes included in the next newsletter, but this particular publication has a special mention of the upcoming Design Weeks where our beloved new Marsio building will serve as one of the main exhibition venues. If you haven’t participated in the Design Weeks before, now is the time. In addition to exhibitions being available this close to school, all events are completely free, including the Habitare fair which you can enter for free as an art student by registering during this week (from the link that will be sent to Telegram).

Inspiring adventures,

HELSINKI DESIGN WEEK

6.9. – 3.10. Designs for a cooler planet festival

Experience tomorrow – Welcome to Marsio!

The Designs for a Cooler Planet festival is one of the three main events of Helsinki Design Week. The festival’s exhibitions will be showcased on campus and in the new Marsio building from 6 September to 3 October, 2024. Information about open events and guided tours will be available at the beginning of August on Cooler Planet’s main page.

The Marsio building, set to open in the heart of the Otaniemi campus in September, is a tribute to the creative pioneer, architect, designer, entrepreneur and Aalto alumna Aino Marsio-Aalto. Aino and Alvar Aalto’s architectural firm triumphed in the Otaniemi site plan design competition in 1949.

Torstai 5.9. Forum Box – Juhani Pallasmaa: Hitchcocks hidden paintings

Hitchcock’s Hidden Paintings

5.9.2024 | 18:00-19:00 | Forum Box

Alfred Hitchcock hid works of art in his films even more thoroughly than his well-known Cameos. Although the director didn’t directly talk about it, he was constantly inspired by visual artists: “I would compare myself to an abstract painter” – after all, he was originally a graphic artist.

Welcome to listen to architect Juhani Pallasmaa‘s lecture on Hitchcock’s relationship with the visual arts.

The lecture is in English. Free entry!

The lecture is part of the program of Helsinki Design Week.

Keskiviikko 11.9. Forum Box’s architecture lecture series: Dennis Alan Winters

Canadian Landscape Architect Dennis Alan Winters will give a lecture titled The Spiritual Nature of Space at Gallery Forum Box.

Dennis Alan Winters, a Buddhist and a designer of places of refuge for spiritual renewal, invites you to explore questions of space and spirituality:

“What is it about Space that makes me feel so alive? Undermines grief? Clears despair and heals the hurt? How can I know what Space is and what it is not, and the mechanism by which Space enriches the profound and everyday ways of thoughts & doings?”

The event is part of Forum Box’s 25th anniversary celebration program.

Date: Wed 11.09.2024

Time: September 11, 2024 at 18:00-19:00

Place: Galleria Forum Box, Ruoholahdenranta 3 A, 00180, Helsinki

The legendary Product Development Project (PdP) course is coming again!

What happens when you give interdisciplinary student teams real industry problems, 10 000€ budget and 9 months time to develop their ideas into products? Whether you are from TECH, BIZ, ARTS or any other background, we welcome you to answer that question.

Too often you hear from the company recruiters that the graduating students aren’t ready for the worklife, and we want to change that. The idea of PdP is to provide students a unique chance to put their learnings to practise and give you real experience you will need in the working life.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Communicate and collaborate with other disciplines
  • Apply your own background in innovating real products
  • Navigate the development process
  • Work in a large, interdisciplinary team
  • Take responsibility by becoming the Project Manager
  • Build big things

Each PdP team has a company sponsor, who provides a real problem, budget and support. There are projects from many fields varying each year, typically including medical, design, IT, and engineering!

Interested? Check out previous projects and find more information at pdp.fi and the PdP MyCourses page

Become a changemaker and join us for the first lecture on 4.9. 15.15 at the Design Factory Stage for the opening lecture!.

Tempaus 2024: 21.10. – 27.10.

The Tempaus Command of the Engineer with a sturdy beard, Sheryl Tokyo, and Kunniamursu was read at Aalto Open Air and the Declaration of Wappu Madness. The theme of Tempaus is now clear: increasing the appreciation of volunteer work in Finland.

As the economy tightens, workplace productivity has become increasingly crucial. Nevertheless, we should not forget about work for which you cannot set a price. Volunteer work cuts across the entire Finnish society and has been evident in the community spirit throughout history. It also holds significant value. It is ultimately about caring for others and genuine altruism, which are also reflected in small daily acts. Many of us engage in volunteer work by donating blood, cleaning up litter from nature, or participating in sports club activities. In our view, volunteer work today does not receive the appreciation it deserves in society.

We invite the entire Aalto community to pay attention to all the volunteer work being done in Finland. Let’s bring up everyone’s efforts together! The preliminary dates for Tempaus are 21–27 Oct, when we will mobilise in large numbers to campaign within cooperative associations.
